  Absolution \Ab`so*lu"tion\, n. [F. absolution, L. absolutio, fr.
     absolvere to absolve. See Absolve.]
     1. An absolving, or setting free from guilt, sin, or penalty;
        forgiveness of an offense. "Government . . . granting
        absolution to the nation." --Froude.
