  Horsefly \Horse"fly`\, n.; pl. Horseflies.
     1. (Zool.) Any dipterous fly of the family Tabanid[ae],
        that stings horses, and sucks their blood.

           Europe and America. They have a large proboscis with
           four sharp lancets for piercing the skin. Called also
