     1. Having or indicating, equal tones, or tension.

     2. (Physiology, Biochemistry) Having an osmotic pressure
        (tonicity) equal to that of a reference solution; -- of
        aqueous solutions. Contrasting with hypotonic and
        hypertonic. See hypertonic.
