  Flax-plant \Flax"-plant`\, n. (Bot.)
     A plant in new Zealand (Phormium tenax), allied to the
     lilies and aloes. The leaves are two inches wide and several
     feet long, and furnish a fiber which is used for making
     ropes, mats, and coarse cloth.
