     (sk[^a]r"s[~e]r); superl. Scarcest.] [OE. scars, OF.
     escars, eschars, LL. scarpsus, excarpsus, for L. excerptus,
     p. p. of excerpere to pick out, and hence to contract, to
     shorten; ex (see Ex-) + carpere. See Carpet, and cf.
     Excerp.]
