     shawm, chaume haulm, stalk; all fr. L. calamus a reed, reed
     pipe. See Haulm, and cf. Calumet.] (Mus.)
     A wind instrument of music, formerly in use, supposed to have
     resembled either the clarinet or the hautboy in form.
