     Sw. sm[aum]rta, D. smart, smert, a pain, G. schmerz, OHG.
     smerzo, and probably to L. mordere to bite; cf. Gr.
     smerdno`s, smerdale`os, terrible, fearful, Skr. m[.r]d to
